On the cover of our monthly journal ”Fukushima-no-Shinro,” literally “Fukushima’s Course”, we introduce various sightseeing spots or beautiful landscapes in Fukushima Prefecture every month.

一ノ戸川橋梁 【喜多方市】
JR磐越西線の喜多方－山都間、阿賀川の支流である一ノ戸川に架かる県内有数の大型橋梁です。全長445m、高さ24mは1908年の架橋当時、東洋一の規模と言われた歴史的・文化的遺産で、今年9月、本橋梁を含む沿線施設が「選奨土木遺産」に認定されました。冬にはこのように美しくライトアップされます。

Bridge Crossing Over Ichinoto River, Kitakata City
Located between Kitakata and Yamato Station, on the JR Ban-Etsu West Line, in the northern Aizu area, lies a bridge over the Ichinoto River which is a branch of the Aga River. The bridge is one of the largest in scale in Fukushima Prefecture, measuring 445 meters in length and 24 meters in height. At the time of its construction in 1908, it was said to be the largest railroad bridge in the East. For its historical and cultural value, the bridge, including the facilities along the line, was designated as a Civil Engineering Heritage site this September. During some winter evenings, you can see this beautifully illuminated bridge.

夏井川渓谷【いわき市】
いわき市川前町から小川町付近にかけて夏井川渓谷があります。昭和28年に県立自然公園に指定され、秋になると紅葉の名所として有名です。もみじやかえでの赤色と清流の青色のコントラストはこの上ない美しさです。耳を澄ませば聞こえてくるのは、川のせせらぎと夏井川沿いの磐越東線をときおり走るディーゼル列車の乾いたエンジンの音だけです。

Natsui River Valley, Iwaki City
In Iwaki City around Kawamae-machi and Ogawa-machi, lies Natsuigawa Valley, designated as a Prefectural Natural Park in 1953. The park along the Natsui River is famous for its beautiful leaves. In autumn, the contrast between red maple tree leaves and blue streams of the river is breathtakingly beautiful. Listen carefully and you can only hear the sound of streams and the dry sound of diesel-powered locomotives which run on the Ban-Etsu East Line along the Natsui River.

鹿角平観光牧場【鮫川村】
北海道のような大草原にキャンプ場、コテージ、クロスカントリーコースなど様々なアクティビティ施設が整備されています。毎年10月には本県最大級のバーベキューイベント「高原の鮫川うまいもの祭り」が開催され、プロライダーによるフリースタイルモトクロスのデモンストレーション走行が披露されます。秋の澄み切った空にジャンプ。鳥になれ！

Kanotsunodaira Tourist Farm, Samegawa Village
The enormously wide prairie farm has various kinds of facilities for outdoor activities, such as camp sites, cottages and cross-country courses. ”The Delicious Foods Festival in Samegawa Highland” is held every October. It is one of the biggest barbecue party events in Fukushima Prefecture, where professional freestyle motocross riders show spectacular demonstration. They jump up into the autumn blue sky, flying like birds!

百尺観音【相馬市】
地元出身の仏師が岩山を切り開いて建立した磨崖仏（まがいぶつ）です。昭和9年から1人で30年余彫り続けましたが未完成のまま他界、その後は子孫が遺志を引き継いでいます。完成すれば約36ｍ(100尺)と日本最大級の仏像彫刻となります。

Buddha Figure Carved on Rock Face, Soma City
This figure is called “Hyaku-shaku Kannon,” meaning Goddess of Mercy with a would-be height of 100 shaku (≒36 meters≒118 feet) high, one of the largest figures in Japan. The carving, having been initiated by a deceased local priest 82 years ago, has been taken over by his ancestors. The figure is still under construction!

スキー場のゲレンデなどを利用した三ノ倉高原には、8月になると東北最大級の250万本のひまわりが畑いっぱいに咲き誇ります。

Sunflower Fields at San-no-Kura Heights, Kitakata City
A magnificent view of sunflowers at San-no-Kura Heights, which is located in the north of Kitakata City, famous for ramen and old-styled warehouses called Kura in Japanese. When August comes, millions of sunflowers are in full bloom on San-no-kura Heights.

三日月の滝【大玉村】
「ふくしまの遊歩道50選」のひとつ、遠藤ヶ滝遊歩道にあるこの滝は、見事な半円形。初夏の緑の中でマイナスイオンを浴びて下さい。

A Crescent-shaped Waterfall, Otama Village
Located in the middle of Fukushima Prefecture, this waterfall is called “Mikazuki-no-Taki,” literally, crescent-shaped waterfall. If you visit here, you can become fully recharged!

JR只見線の会津水沼・会津中川間の只見川に架かる橋梁。今は息をのむほど美しい万緑の季節ですが、紅葉も素晴らしいローカル線でもあります。

Trains Crossing the River in Greenery, Kaneyama Town
You can see trains crossing a bridge over the Tadami River in the deep Aizu, western area of Fukushima Prefecture. June is in high season for greenery. Imagine how exquisitely beautiful it is with colored autumn leaves as well.

This is an aquarium featuring ocean current rip where the warm current (Kuroshio) and the cold current (Oyashio) converge off Fukushima Prefecture. You can see a display of a real specimen of a coelacanth. You can also enjoy a “backyard tour” where you can learn about the workings of the aquarium equipment.

Hanamiyama Hill, literally, a blossom-viewing hill, is famed for its brilliant cherry blossoms, which is often referred to as “Shangri-la.” In April, you can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms with the panorama of Mt.Azuma-Kofuji and rabbit-shaped lingering snow pattern.
